The 2013 regular election dates for millage or bond proposals are as follows:
February 26, 2013
May 7, 2013
August 6, 2013
November 5, 2013
Michigan election law requires that a certified copy of the resolution approving ballot language for millage or bond propositions be forwarded to the election coordinator at least 70 daysbefore the respective election date. For the February 26, 2013 regular election, that deadline is Tuesday, December 18, 2012. If your school district is considering a millage or bond proposition for the February 2013 election, please contact your election attorney at Thrun Law Firm as soon as possible.
If your school district is considering a bond proposal for the May 7, 2013 election and the bonds will be qualified with the Michigan School Loan Revolving Fund, school officials must meet with the Department of Treasury in December 2012 or early January 2013. Because the Department of Treasury’s meeting calendars for December and early January fill up quickly, we recommend that you contact your finance attorney at Thrun Law Firm as soon as possible to schedule the Treasury meeting related to a May 2013 bond election. Further, for the May 2013 election, the Michigan election law deadline for filing a certified copy of the resolution approving ballot language for millage or bond propositions with the election coordinator is Tuesday, February 26, 2013.
On August 15, 2012, House Bill 4907 passed the Michigan House. On September 11, 2012, the Bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Local Government and Elections. If this Bill is approved by the Senate and signed into law by the Governor, the election law deadline to file the resolution approving the ballot language with the election coordinator will change from 70 days to at least 12 weeks before the election date. We will continue to keep you informed of the status of HB 4907.
Registered electors in a school district may also circulate petitions to place a millage or bond proposition on the ballot on a date other than the regular election dates set forth above. The petition initiative (“floater”) election dates in 2013 are:
January 1, 8, 15, 22
June 18, 25
September 17, 24
December 17, 24, 31
